Rob Hofmann visits the Starboard/Severne-powered Club Vass in Lefkada (Greece) and shares why it’s such a good place to go whether you’re a beginner or an advanced slalomer looking for strong winds.
I’ve just spent a great week visiting the biggest windsurfing center in Greece, on the Island of Lefkada: Club Vass. I went there to check out whether the place was suitable for a clinic. Colin Dixon and Marco Wedele have told me many times to come over and visit them in the summer time, so I thought the first week of July would be the perfect moment to go there!
First I drove from Rome to Brindisi, in Southern Italy and took the ferry from Brindisi to Igoumenitsa, which took about 7 hours! I then drove the nice scenic route down to Lefkada, which was about 140 km. The week I spend there was windy with between 15 and 30 knots every day! Perfect for beginners in the morning due to the light onshore winds and then, around 3 PM, the wind shifts and comes from its thermal direction to reach full strength around 6-7 PM. A perfect place for high-wind slalom sailing and freeriding as well.
Thanks to the support of Club Vass, I was able to store all my gear on location. And the team is always super helpful and friendly! The Club Vass Center also has quite a few SUP boards, that are great for morning sessions and exploring the amazing bay. What’s also impressive are the 250 rigged Severne Sails and the 150 boards (unfortunately some Fanatic as well… laughs) waiting on stand-by for a lucky customer!
I sailed every day on my iSonic 107 and a 7.0m² sail and reached speeds of almost 36 knots, due to the flat water conditions under the mountain!! I think this is a great place for beginners, advanced and pros to have a lot of fun. This place is mostly known to British people, and the center just celebrated its 25th anniversary this year! Still, the location is not overcrowded and the atmosphere is really nice. I recommend to everyone to plan a visit to Club Vass in Vassiliki and enjoy some of the best gear over there!!
