ROB HOFMANN WINDSURFING CLINIC – MAUI (HAWAII)
ROB HOFMANN WINDSURFING CLINIC – MAUI (HAWAII) From 15 – 30 NOVEMBER 2013 – REPORT in Hookipa
I have to say, that after many clinics I have done over last five years this was the one with the most exotic and far location.
I’ve been with my students to Egypt (Dahab- Marsa Alam) for several times, Marocco (Dahkla), Cape Verde (Sal), but Maui was defintly a dream come true for all of my students. The organisation of the trip was a bit more difficult, because everybody was flying out of different airports from Italy and Germany, but at the end my 16 students all made it to the Island of Maui.
Our home was based in Haiku, and our technical base was the “Haiwaiian Island Surf and Sport”(HISS) Rental in Kahului. I chose the HISS, because they have all the 2014 STARBOARD range that i needed, and that was just perfect fot all my students.
We had all conditions from strong Trades (4.7 sails) to light Trades (6.5 Freeride sails) in Kanaha, to great flatwater conditions in KIhei (south part of Maui) with 20 – 25 knots. At the end we had 9 windsurfing days out of 14, that is not bad for the month of November.
We also had a few good swells, so everybody was stoked from the windsurfing point of view.
Obviously we had to visit all the locations, that are a “must” on Maui, and so we were quite happy to have a few days without wind.
We drove around the West maui mountains. We wachted the sunrise on top of the Haleakala (3.050 m), we drove the road to Hana (692 turns). Went to Lahaina, Makena and much more.
But coming back to the windsurfing part, we enjoyed as mentioned the beach of Kanaha and everybody could use some bigger gear on the lighter days, and try out the new Starboard Carve 111 and 121, the Futura 101, 111,121 and the Kode Freestyle wave 103 and 94, and Kode Wave 92.
This location is close to the airport, and has a huge parking area and perfect grass to rigg , and to do some theory in the shade.
Clear water and a sandy beach make this location a dream for every freerider and freestyler and wave entry.
The days the wind was a bit more fom the North, we drove to Kihei (just a 15 min drive) and had perfect flat water conditions for jibing and getting good speed. I really have to thank Dennis and all the stuff from HISS, for the great support and assistance.
It was an amazing 2 weeks where everybody improved the windsurfing skills, but also learned that the MAUI feeling is unique in the world, and it’s a place where every Windsurfer has to go once in his lifetime!! I prefer to let the picstures talk!!
See you in 2014 with more Rob Hofmann Windsurfing Clinics!! ALOHA
